Do black people really need sun protection?

“Black people don’t need to wear sun-protection right?!”

This is definitely that I had believed until recently. I remember going on holiday and buying any SPF 30-50 sunscreen I could find, not to protect my skin from some of the harmful rays of the sun but to stop my face from getting darker, I wanted to come back from holiday and not be subjected to my foundation now turning into a highlighter! It has only been in recent months that I have begun to be exposed to the real truths about black skin and sun damage.

Let’s start by discussing the differences between caucasian skin and black skin varying from the lightest to the darkest of skin tones. The difference is only in the cells which actually produce our skins pigmentation- also known as melanin. The distribution of melanin is what varies in skin tones. More melanin accounts for the darkened skin tones. The extra melanin in black skin offers a better natural defence against the sun but this does not mean total defence. Research has shown that the maximum amount of protection black skin provides does not exceed 20 minutes and that sun over-exposure causes problems such as dryness and dark spots which can lead to long term ski damage. In fact many of the skin issues we face, such as uneven skin tone, hyper-pigmentation and slower healing time (particularly for scars) is primarily a result of sun damage. Even though it takes longer and for visible damage to occur on darker skin, sun damage is always greater on skin that’s exposed to sun than skin that’s properly protected no matter what you skin colour is.

As someone who lives in London we do not get intense heat all year around however, we forget that it’s the sun that actually provides light so essentially we are exposed to the sun and its harmful rays every day. I remember reading somewhere that as long as you have windows with direct sunlight coming through you need to have sun protection, therefore sun protection should be a part of your everyday routine, especially your face. Now this might seem a bit extreme but when you actually look at the science behind it, it makes sense. The sun’s radiation includes ultraviolet rays. UVA and UVB which both cause damage to our skin UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis, the skin's thickest and deepest layer. This is what leads to premature skin aging and wrinkling, and suppression of the immune system. UVB rays will usually burn the more surface areas of our skin. It plays a key role in the development of keloidal, melanoma and even sun cancer. Even when it’s cold or cloudy up to 40% of the suns radiation reaches the earth. This misperception often leads to the most damage, therefore good sun protection needs to be worn all year round- come rain or shine. Adverse environmental effects also means that it’s not good news for our skin; the atmospheres ozone layer which shields the earth from a lot of the UV radiation from the sun is starting to deplete causing more of the radiation to reach us here on earth. Popular chemical resurfacing treatments also leave the skin more prone to the harmful effects of the sun!

The great news is there is lots of protection available out there and brown skin friendly products are increasing becoming available, just be educated and know what to look out for Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measurement of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays. If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, for example, wearing an SPF 15 sunscreen would theoretically allow you to stay in the sun for 150 minutes (10 x 15) without burning. This is a rough estimate, however, and your own skin, the type of activity you do in the sun (i.e. one involving water or sweat), and the intensity of sunlight may give you more or less safety. Also make sure that you are getting products that protect from both UVA and UVB radiation. Avoid ones that contain lots of zinc or titanium oxide that make the formulations bright white, leaving the skin looking blue/grey.

Overall I have realised that sun protection needs to be an essential part of my daily skin routine to protect and nourish my skin especially in this day and age where our is exposed to a lot more radiation and the effects of chemical based products! Some may say that this is all a bit too much and that our ancestors, grandmas and grandpas have done fine without it. I say yes that’s true but I ancestors also lived without many of the things that we have access to now. If you have access to it I say use it and remember prevention is ALWAYS better than cure.

Here are some great choices for black skin:

Tuesday Ten: How to develop a consistent pamper and self-care routine:

  1. Set out time in your week dedicated to pampering and taking care of yourself; whether it’s half a day or a few hours or maybe you can assign a whole day to it. This time will consist of body scrubs, face masks, oiling, pampering your feet and nails and this is all aimed to really do a deep cleanse leaving your skin in supple condition and getting you ready for the week ahead.
  2. Reflection time- Do an evaluation of your whole body, what your skin likes and dislikes, what are some of the skin problems that you need to resolve. Also there may be some areas that you have neglected whether it is your teeth, skin, hair removal routine etc. be an expert in your body, skin and self.
  3. Figure out the self-care that you are going to pay for and get done in a salon and the ones that you are going to do yourself.
  4. Do not overlook things like going to the doctors, dentist, opticians these are very important especially to check up on your overall health. Ideally you should be having check-ups every 6 months.
  5. Research the products that you are going to need for your pamper sessions.
  6. Make sure that you research the brands that you want to invest in, here's a guide on how to do so.
  7. Go ahead and buy all the products you are going to need.
  8. Planning and preparation is vital, so decide what treatments you are going to do on that day. Also decide on your facial cleansing routine for the week too. Whether you are going to do certain masks on certain days or use different cleansers on different days make sure you make a note of this and most importantly stick to what you have decided.
  9. Remember that success is the by-product of consistency, so if you want your skin to be a certain way don't focus on the results but on actually making sure that you are doing what you need to do and that you're doing it well!
  10. Remember that routines and consistency is about regular small steps, small changes can make big difference down the line. Take care of your self while you still can!

Review: Farsali 24k Rose Gold Elixir

I've had the Farsali 24k Rose Gold Elixir for a while now and I'm only getting around to reviewing it now, since then it has literally blown all over Instagram, with every blogger using it! I'm going to review it as a moisturiser as I'm yet to add it to my make-up routine (I’m currently obsessed with the matte look). The brand was founded by YouTuber Farah Dhukai and her husband. I have been watching Farah Dhukai on YouTube for years now- she does some great DIY’s, so when she released her own skincare brand I knew it was going to be fantastic! This is the second product in their skincare range, with the Volcanic Elixir night oil being the debut release from Farsali (I'm yet to try that one). I was in awe when the beauty oil was first advertised by Farsali. I fell in love with the sound and look of the product even before I got my hands on it. A beauty oil with 24k gold infusions?!  It was love at first thought! I also absolutely love the way they have marketed the product as “beauty meets luxury”- it definitely has that luxury feel and smell (I will come on to that later) about it! I have been using this as my summer night oil and I have used it as a daytime moisturiser too. I have combination skin, when I first got the product my skin was not in a great place I was breaking out a lot, my skin was also blemish prone and I did not have a steady routine as a result my skin did not take very well to the product. I think my break outs were being caused by a number of factors way before I bought the Rose Gold Elixir so I'm not blaming the oil but I don’t think it helped my skin either. Therefore I would only suggest using this product when your skin is stable and as part of a stable tried and tested skin routine. I would not use it to combat a break out, on severely acne prone skin or while your skin is in a sensitive stage. Now that my skin is more stable I am able to use it without any problems.

The base of this beauty product is Rosehip oil; here are the benefits as stated on the website:

  • Great lightweight moisturiser suitable for all skin types
  • Anti-aging benefits
  • High in vitamin C and A (retinol)
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks
  • Can be used as a hydrating primer before applying make-up

Cons:
  • The ingredients are amazing. Farsali is a naturally inspired brand, free from harmful chemicals and the ingredients in this oil are just divine. Ingredients: Rosehip Seed Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, 24k Gold, Vitamin E, Lemongrass Oil, Orange Peel Oil
  • I absolutely love the smell of this oil- it has a citrus smell from the lemongrass oil and orange peel ingredients, but it’s not too strong or over powering and can I say that it smells like luxury!
  • Love the 24k infusion and how it looks in the oil, very pretty! Im definitely someone who is won over  by aesthetics
  • Easily absorbed into skin and doesn’t leave a greasy finish, my skin felt supple after applying
  • Nut free so suitable for those with nut allergies
Pros:
  • Doesn’t have great anti-inflammatory properties as I was not able to use as a when my skin had broken out and when it was sensitive

I haven’t used the oil consistently enough to say how it works on hyperpigmentation and other skin issues but as a moisturiser it is great and very hydrating.

Verdict Yay or Nay: Yay

Tuesday Ten: 10 ways to get focus back into your life!

Hey guys so it's been a while but we are back in action! As we are back this is a very fitting post, I must say…

So we are  halfway through the year already! Although we never know what life is going to throw at us we can aim to be as focused and as prepared as possible. I have learnt that it’s really easy to get side tracked and before you know it off-track so here are 10 ways to get back in gear for the next 6 months! Set out a whole day to really align your thinking and actions to get back on track.

  1. Realign with your values, goals and motivations. Have some projects been abandoned, go back and revisit them remind yourself of your 'why', set goals to move forward
  2. Write down what it will actually take to fulfil your goals, so what it will take physically and mentally and start to prepare yourself
  3. Remember that discipline is more important than motivation. Motivation is temporary whereas developing consistent, routine habits and sticking to them is definitely has more long term consequences.
  4. Identify what has taken your attention, identify your distractions and list them. Identify what triggers those distractions to occur and prepare yourself for when they do try and take your attention.
  5. Remind yourself and write down all the reasons why you can’t give up
  6. Don’t isolate yourself, stay connected and even reconnect with people with good energy who can uplift and motivate you
  7. Get active and stay active! Exercise has such great benefits. Remember whatever you do keep at it, however small it may be, get into a routine because it’s always harder to start again once you have had a long break and it will get easier.
  8. Take time out daily to reflect and think about your focus.
  9. Take time out weekly to recuperate and pamper yourself.
  10. Remember that things don’t just happen, yes achieving your goals is going to be hard but you might as well prepare yourself for the joys and the pain and give it all you’ve got!

Try it Thursdays: How to get rid of uneven skin tone/discolouration/hyper-pigmentation and sunburn

Hyper-pigmentation is something that I have, so I am always trying to find ways to combat it. The hard thing is you need to be consistent with your regimen and treatments for it to really be effective. Discolouration can be natural or something that develops as a result of the environment that we live in. For example, over exposure to the sun or extreme weather conditions can all contribute. Post- inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (acne scars) can also leave dark marks on the skin. Changes in the body such as pregnancy or hormonal imbalance can also contribute or trigger discolouration and hyper-pigmentation. The good news is that a good skincare routine can combat it.

You will need:

Rice flour & milk

Rice flour- It is a natural skin lightening agent that not only improves discolouration but also helps in soothing sunburnt skin as it has lots of acids in it that act as sun screen and prevents sunburn. It is also a great anti-inflammatory!

Milk- Milk contains lactic acid which is a great aid in removing dead skin cells sticking to the surface of your skin, which helps in restoring an even-toned look.

Instructions:

Add a heaped teaspoon of rice flour and an equal amount of milk and mix until you have a thick consistency that will stay and can be applied to your face without dripping off. Take a clean brush and apply to a clean face. You can also use this all over your body as a scrub.

Leave on your face for 10-15 minutes and then wash off. Once you're ready to wash it off, it can be used as an exfoliator!

Pat dry your face and follow with a moisturiser and natural organic oil of choice.

Note: Please conduct a patch test before you put this mask all over your face, if
you notice irritation or redness, please do not use it.

Happy DIY-ing

Tuesday Ten: 10 ways to cultivate real change in your life:

2016 was supposed to be a new year and a new you, right? So why do you seem to be returning back to old habits and old ways like it’s some sort of default setting? It’s great that you have identified something in your life that you need to change, now what’s next…

1.    First of all you need to go deeper than that, you need to analyse and take time to reflect, figure out and really get to know yourself and the habits that you’re working with. For example, if you are eating unhealthily and you want to transition to a healthy lifestyle, then you need to identify what is causing you to eat that way- are those the kinds of foods you‘ve been eating since childhood? Do you get cravings for those sorts of foods? Are there any triggers that cause you to eat unhealthily? In order to progress forward you need to identify your bad ingrained habits and what causes them to occur.

2.    Re-wire your thinking, now when I say re-wire your thinking this isn’t just a quick decision to think more positively or optimistically, this needs to be intentional. I refer to it as a fight. Remember that your thoughts control everything! Thoughts become things; therefore it’s literally going to take mental strength and good old time to get to you to a place where you can see change. You are going to be undoing possibly years of bad habits therefore it’s going to take a lot of focus and everything you have in you. In order to change you need to apply yourself to what you are doing mentally, if you leave your thoughts and focus to go unchecked then it’s not going to work.

3.    Change your standards: I remember that for a long time what I thought was my “best” wasn't really my “best,” I just had low standards for myself. A lot of the time we don’t even realise that we have set this low standard for ourselves until we really dig deep and reflect. This is why I absolutely love reflection. I remember I used to tell myself not to go for certain things because they were slightly beyond me until one day I realised “Why not me?” I had to then go through a process of setting my standards much higher, to the best.

4.    One of my favourite quotes is: “you can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results. “ This is 100% truth. Therefore if you want to see results, you need to make a complete 180 degrees turn from those bad habits because a culmination of bad habits is what results in stagnancy and low performance. Comfort, fear and a lack of knowledge is what keeps us stationary. Whatever is keeping us from where we need to be we need to get up and move from it otherwise it will keep us in chains forever. Old methods and old ideas need to become out of date!

5.   Force change: Whenever I have a motivation to change I do something quick and practical to shift my brain, so I will force myself to do something different like read a new thought provoking book or get up earlier just to demonstrate to my brain and to myself that real change is coming. It’s not going to come naturally to you if it’s not a habit so you have to force it at first, but it will get easier.

6.   Regular small steps daily: Success is the culmination of regularly executed habits day in day out, it doesn't happen overnight. Consistency and patience is key.

7.    Constantly renew your energy: Energy is renewable! Yay! This means that we can always get back to our optimum performance level after some recovery (rest, regaining energy). There are 4 aspects of us as humans that we need to renew consistently: our physical bodies, mental capacities, spiritual (purpose) capacities and social interactions. You need to find out what personally renews your energy. Lots of articles on successful and productive people have really put this down to having a great morning routine. For me reading my scriptures in the bible, reflection and exercise is what I use in the mornings to really renew my energy and make the most of the day ahead.

8.    Develop resilience, this means being able to work at a maximum performance level but also realising that life isn't always going to be plain sailing there’s going to be a few bumps along the road and challenges that you will encounter. However, your ability to thrive in the midst of those challenges, adapt, respond and move forward is the main thing. This is why it will all come down to your re-wired thinking and mental strength. Sometimes things can be so strong to knock us down temporarily and that’s okay, take some time, cry it out but get back up and start again.

9.   You’re fighting for your destiny: I've mentioned fight quite a few times but that is because I actually believe that it is a fight! A famous quote that I often find myself reading is that your thoughts become actions, your actions become habits, your habits become your character and your character becomes your destiny. I truly believe this because if you’re not fighting for your destiny then who else is going to? You will just end up being a product of what you are given and not what is inside you. I believe that every single person on this earth is born with a purpose and with talents and gifts to go with that purpose. If you don’t fight to be the best version of you possible then you’ll be settling with a survival version of you and the world would have never been able to see your full potential and that upsets me L

10.   Lastly becoming the best version of yourself will take time, you need to grow at your own pace and fix your eyes on your own grass. The way I see it I can’t be spending energy looking at other people’s lives if I’m not happy with where I am. The easy thing to do would be to be jealous of their lives and never make a change in your own life but that’s not wise! So let’s really give this ALL we’ve got, it’s the least you can do (yes standards)!

Here is a great list of 15 things highly productive people do differently (I know there are so many of these floating around but this is the best I've seen: click here

Tuesday 10: The 10 best beauty facial oils!

The rise of beauty oils has really caused a stir in the beauty world with top beauty experts ranting and raving about them we just had to find out the top 10! Oils are great for nurturing and rejuvenating the skin. Although companies claim that the latest face oil formulations are so advanced that they really are suited to all skin types, I have learnt from experience that you NEED to try before you INVEST and find the beauty oil that works best for your individual face. Having said that, there is this one oil that I have found to be the most universal so far! I have not heard a bad review about someone using coconut oil on their face and it going wrong! Please let me know if you have had a bad experience with coconut oil. Remember to make sure that all the oils you are buying are organic, raw and cold pressed!

  1.  Coconut oil
  2. Argan Oil
  3. Vitamin E
  4. Tamanu Oil
  5. Rosehip Oil
So now onto the blended oils:
  1. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate face oil
  2. RMS beauty Oil
  3. The Sanctuary Spa Therapist's Secret Facial Oil
  4. Origins Plantscription Youth-Renewing Face Oil
  5. Darphin- The revitalizing oil

Tuesday Ten: 10 healthier food alternatives in 2016

My decision to make healthier substitutes and habits to my diet came after years of just eating what I wanted. For me eating was a need and I satisfied it with what I could get my hands on, junk food, sugar and processed foods. Lots of people around me went down the ‘healthier’ route when it came to diets but since I didn't have to worry about dieting I didn't really care- yes, I am one of those people who can eat lots and lots and not gain any weight! But that doesn't make up for the health problems that you can still face and while I thank God that I don’t have any serious health problems and that it didn’t take a serious health problem to see the light, in some cases it can be that real. I started to notice small problems as a result of my diet and I eventually figured that my diet did play and large part in those things. Also as you get older you can’t get away with eating unwholesome food and getting away with it and you come to appreciate your body and not feed it with rubbish, I now know that my body is a temple and a precious gift from God to use well. So with all that in mind plus the growing trend of a healthier lifestyle and YouTube influencers I decided that it was about time I made some small but significant changes towards a healthier lifestyle. The YouTuber “SunkissAlba” keeps coming up a lot on here but that's because discovering her channel made me really change the way I think about healthy eating and what actually goes inside my body. So I started a journey of being more aware of what I put in and on my body! While I'm not where I want to be, I'm far from where I used to be and I feel great!

1. Drinking more water- Water has so many amazing benefits internally and externally, we are supposed to drink at least 2L a day some say half of your body weight in ounces! Make substitutes for fizzy drinks and juices and if you don’t like water start slowly by having it after meals when your body craves it more. Adding fruits to create detox water is a great way to add a bit of taste to it. Check out "verified_beauty" on instagram for water detox ideas.

2. White sugar alternatives- White sugar is bleached, chemically processed and refined. Although brown sugar is a tad healthier it really is just white sugar mixed with molasses. I use brown sugar but I don’t have a sweet tooth and only really eat sugar in the mornings with my porridge. If I want something sweet in my beverages I use honey. If you do have a sweet tooth there are many sugar alternatives such as coconut palm sugar and honey. Also becareful of ‘low fat’ products because usually other chemicals have been put in as a substitute.

3. Cutting down on white rice and bringing in the browns- Less processing and more nutrients!

4. Adding more fruit and veg to my diet- Get ahead on your five a day, as we know fruit and especially organic fruit makes a great healthy snack.

5. Adding super-foods to my diet- Great in minerals and antioxidants which can aid so much in the body. Get the low down on super-foods here > superfoods 101

6. Smoothies and juices- Great way to get all your nutrients in one go.

7. Healthier snacking: From popcorn to healthy home-made desserts to rice cakes there are so many great alternatives. Here’s a great and healthy food blog with lots of ideas > Hungry Happens

8. Saying no to white bread and eating brown bread but cutting down on bread in general.

9. Exercise- This has made such a positive difference in my life and I really do advise you to take up some form of exercise if you don’t already do so! I started off by joining the gym and going to exercise classes, now I can’t imagine my life without it! I feel so healthy and overall it makes such a difference to your body.

10. Digestion aids, having a healthy digestion system is great internally and externally! It gets rid of that bloated feeling! Apple cider vinegar great for digestion. Diluting it with water and taking it before and after meals is great for it. It also makes a great toner along with other fantastic benefits!  Peppermint and other herbal teas are also great for digestion.

Try it Thursdays:Combating Enlarged pores

Enlarged pores are such a bane of life! I usually get them when my skin is in need of a deep clean and I can usually shrink them with a face mask but prevention is better that cure! While it is impossible to get rid of them, you can shrink their appearance. I have found that staying away from heavy oil based products and moisturisers help but enlarged pores can be caused by a lot of other factors such as genetics, blackheads and ageing.

Here are 5 great ways to reduce enlarged pores and stay ahead of the game:

#1 Baking soda: There are lots of different ways in which you can incorporate baking soda into your regimen, you can add it to your face wash, use it as a facial mask or use it as a facial scrub by adding water to it. It’s great as a facial scrub if your skin is like mine and doesn't take well to sugar scrubs for exfoliating. Whichever way you choose to incorporate it, baking soda serves as a great at home dermabrasion, helping to increase blood flow to the skin and removing dead skin cells giving you a deep clean. With baking soda a little goes a long way as it is very potent! If your skin is very sensitive please use baking soda with caution as it can irritate the skin.

#2 Staying away from Harsh Products: Products that are too strong and using them very often can cause enlarged pores. Cleansers, toners and astringents that may be too acidic or alcoholic may be to stripping for the skin and dry out your skin.  When skin becomes overly dry, our oil glands produce excess oils which can clog our pores and enlarge them. So while there might be a temporary tightening of the pores from those harsher cleansing products, the long-term effects can be adverse.

#3 Using face masks: Natural face masks are great and inexpensive. One that I found out recently was mixing 2 egg whites, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. There are lots of ingredients out there that you can mix together but here is my go to facial mask when I do have enlarged pores and I guarantee you will see a difference overnight!

You will need:

1 teaspoon of gram flour
A pinch of turmeric (my fave!)
Half a teaspoon of milk
A pinch of lemon juice (optional, use with caution)
A pinch of almond oil or oil of choice (note this bit is optional)

Mix all the ingredients together and apply to a clean face. Leave it on to dry and then wash off! Follow by applying a moisturiser of choice.

Check out the Verified Beauty Instagram page for more pore reducing tips and ingredients.

I would love to hear some of your tips.

Product Review: Alba Botanica Hawaiian facial wash, toner and moisturiser.

The search for non-toxic and healthier skincare options continue. A facial wash that I've been using is the Alba Botanica Hawaiian range. One thing I would say is that getting to know your skin is very important but it’s also an ongoing journey! My skin has changed a lot over the past year and what I could get away with in the past I can’t get away with now! Before I could get away with just giving my skin TLC here and there but now my skin screams for TLC everyday! My skin has become very needy and even though I'm only 24, I know that it’s good to start putting in extra work into your skincare at a younger age so you won’t regret it in the future! My skin is very needy at the moment and I want to give it the best so I need to be on top of my game! I've been using this facial cleanser for about 4 months now, the toner I have been on and off with and the moisteriser I used for the first month. I heard about the Alba Botanica brand from YouTube from a you-tuber called “SunKissAlba.” I absolutely love her channel; she is all about green beauty and health. Alba Botanica is an American brand and is not available in any UK shops that I know off but it is available online! I ordered mine from a website called Lucy Rose. The Alba Botanica Hawaiian Coconut Milk Face Wash 237ml was £7.29, the Alba Botanica Hawaiian facial toner 251ml was £7.29 and the Alba Botanica Hawaiian Moisture Cream 85g was £9.29 At first I was using the trio every day as part of my night time routine and then I stopped using the facial toner for a while and the moisturiser altogether. Alba Botanica is a 100% vegetarian brand, using no parabens, sulphates, artificial colouring and phthalates. Some of their ingredients are certified as organic but that is dependent on the product #knowyourbrands

The Alba Botanica Hawaiian Coconut Milk Face Wash 237ml

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), C14-22 Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract*, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Oil*, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Panthenol, Polysorbate 60, Potassium Hydroxide, Tocopheryl Acetate, Alcohol*, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol , Coumarin, Fragrance (Parfum)

PROS

  • Some really good ingredients such as ginger, aloe vera, papaya and coconut
  • Light weight formula
  • Moisturising doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry and stripped
  • Fruity pleasant smell

CONS

  • This facial wash was not cleansing enough for my skin, definitely can’t be used once especially if you’ve had a day of city grime and make up on. I was finding myself having to use it 3 times on the days where I had a full face of make up on and most of the times I would still have traces of make up on.
  • Too oil-rich for my face on some days- on the days where my face really needed a deep cleanse I felt that this cleanser was just a bit too moisturising and not cleansing enough to really clean deep into my pores which I believe resulted in mini break outs and oversized pores (which is a skin problem that I struggle with!). That plus adding an oil moisturiser was just too much for my pores. This has resulted in me alternating between the Hawaiian range and the acne dote range which is very cleansing and stripping.

I found that using the facial wash in the mornings was a much better option for my skin!

Alba Botanica Hawaiian facial toner 251ml

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Polysorbate 20, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (1), Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Passiflora Incarnata Flower Extract, Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Allantoin, Panthenol, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium PCA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol).

PROs

  • Clean, citrus Smell

CONS

  • This toner did not go well with my skin at all and I think that was because of  the high concentration of lemon extracts, it was just too harsh my skin and left my skin feeling a little irritated. I decided to dilute the toner with water as that is what I usually do when I add lemon to any facial products and it worked much better but on its own is a no-no for my skin. If you have sensitive skin especially to citrus I would not recommend.

Alba Botanica Hawaiian Moisture Cream 85g

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil (1), Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Octyl Palmitate , Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (1), Cetyl Alcohol , Glyceryl Laurate , Tocopheryl Acetate , Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil, Borago Officinalis Seed Oil (1), Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil , Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil (1), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (1), Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract , Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Extract , Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract , Allantoin , Dimethicone , Panthenol , Stearic Acid, Tocopherol , Tromethamine , Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Linalool , Fragrance (Parfum).

PROs

  • Nice cool citrus smell

CONS

  • Contains Alcohol
  • Too oil rich for my skin, contributed in my skin having mini breakouts and clogging my pores, there is a oil-free alternative version which I think would have been better suited for my skin. I’m really learning that my skin doesn’t like moisturisers that are oil rich, I prefer it when I add oils to my moisturiser as and when my skin needs it.

Throughout the process of using Alba Botanica I've realised a lot about my skin and what it likes and dislikes. Most of my skin problems, random breakouts and enlarged pores are as a result of my pores being clogged up with bacteria and I've realised that moisture rich or citrus based products don’t help my skin. I have combination skin so I need a very good deep cleanser that isn't too stripping but that also has the right amount of moisturiser to really balance out my skin but nothing that is too moisture rich. I also need a lemon and alcohol free toner.

10 new things that I'm trying in 2016

Photography: This is something that has been on my mind for a while; I already love and admire good photography so I want to try it out myself and I feel like I have a good eye for it lol. I can’t wait to get started on the angles and lighting not so excited about the editing side though.

Immune boosting and sickness prevention juices and foods: My immune system is a sucker when it comes to colds and prevention is always better than cure so, I’m going to take better care of myself by adding immune boosting juices and super-foods into my diet on a REGULAR basis and make it fun and exciting (so I stick to it)!

Interior design and decor: I absolutely love Interior design and with the endless inspiration on Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram, my obsession is well and truly being fed! I have so many ideas and colour schemes for my future house!

A new found appreciation for flowers: So another thing that I have a slight obsession with is event planning and particularly wedding event planning (blame Instagram!). This has made me develop an appreciation for flowers! I am in love with floral detailing. From floral walls to floral photobooths to traditional bouquets and petal arrangements! I will definitely be incorporating flowers into my home and life!

Quintessentially British things: A new found appreciation for where I live and my lovely city of London (yes despite the weather). So let’s dive into all things British from tea to British brands.

A book a week: Can I just say how difficult this is! I’m definitely trying to be more proactive rather than reactive this year so I can’t really complain but it’s something that I have to be really intentional about doing otherwise there will “never be time.” When it comes to reading, I have been slacking for years now but it’s time to get serious about it. I have so many unfinished books and books that I need to read!

Mastering highlight and contour: This needs to be done; I’ve been procrastinating from learning and doing it properly on myself for far too long

Sticking to plans: This one speaks for itself, say no to feelings say YES to plans and preparations

Drama lessons: I loved drama as a child but somehow got disconnected from all things arty, it’s time to rekindle the love this year

Quality over quantity: The older I get the more I appreciate this saying and it’s one that I’m most definitely embracing this year! Woop! From material possessions to design, it’s one saying that is here to stay.

What new things are you doing or trying in 2016? I would love to know.

My 2016 Simple Healthy Hair Regimen

2016 is underway and what a great time to share some of my 2016 hair and skin goals with you guys. As each year goes on my aim is to continue to be the best version of me possible and that applies to all areas of my life. Here is my 2016 hair regimen for the foreseeable future and I will be sticking to it! Here’s to healthy, long hair!

I have afro-Caribbean hair. My hair is currently always in protective styling (cornrows) as I grow my hair. My last relaxer was in March 2014 and since then I have transitioned to natural hair.

    Daily Liquid Intake

Morning: Cup of warm Lime/ Lemon infused Water /Peppermint Tea or Green Tea

Before Lunch: (I haven’t incorporated this into my regime yet but will be after a month) Cup of Bamboo, Rosebud and Grapefruit Tea – all rich in Silica and Antioxidant which is great for your hair!

Throughout the day: 1 litre of water

Early Evening: Fruit & Veg Green or red Smoothie (will do a blog post the green smoothie) link to red smoothie is here.

Diet: So my diet is pretty good, I have been making healthier substitutions for a while now, I generally don’t eat junk food and I don’t really have a sweet tooth apart from when it comes to cakes or dessert but I only indulge in those once in a while.

    Maintenance of ends:

Everyday apply moisturiser and oil to cornrow and edges- not scalp (apart from shampoo and hot oil treatments 24 hours before shampooing I don’t put anything else on my scalp as my scalp does not like it. Putting too much product on your scalp causes product build up which blocks hair follicles) Contrary to what I believed when I was growing up our scalp does produce oil!

Take Omega 3-6-9 Fish oil (one) and Spirulina (two) supplements DAILY – both are from Holland and Barrett’s

Every wash-day I will be rubbing some oil onto my damp ends before I style

I will also be moisturising and sealing ends everyday.

Exercise and blood circulation to scalp

Increasing your heartbeat will increase blood circulation even to your scalp, plus the benefits of exercise are endless.

    Oil Scalp Massages

12-24 hours before I wash my hair I will be massaging my scalp with a mixture of essential and carrier oils the base of which will be coconut oil.

    Washday Chronicles

I will be switching from washing my hair from every 2 weeks to washing or co-washing (washing hair with conditioner) every week, washing and protective styling natural hair is very time consuming so I need to be on top of my game!

I will be washing my hair with the Shea Moisture jamaican black castor oil strengthen and restore shampoo here’s a review I did on it. I will also be adding a green tea hair rinse to my regimen.
Green Tea hair rinse: Take some green tea bags and put them in hot water. Let the bags sit for at least 4 hours then wash and condition your hair. Meanwhile wash and condition your hair then lastly rinse your hair with the green tea.

For deep conditioning I will be using the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Mask link here plus adding extra oils in there. I use the beautiful textures moisturising curl cream available here with coconut oil (Lucy Bees) and argan oil (I bought this from Morocco but any argan oil that is raw, pure, cold-pressed, organic and fair trade). I will also be applying oil to my edges. I use the beautiful textures cream when cornrowing available here to give my hair extra slip.

Once a month I will do protein treatments instead of the deep conditioning mask, I will be doing a blog post on a DIY protein treatment.

When I wash my hair I section it into two and wash one side at a time.

Pretty simple right? I will be doing weekly personal reviews and monthly reviews on the blog. So that wraps it up. I will be using the hashtag #VBHealthyHair for my pictures and I will keep you guys updated!

What’s your current hair regimen for 2016?

Stay tuned for my 2016 skincare regimen.
